Taipei, May 23 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen reiterated Tuesday that Taiwan will continue its role as a reliable partner of the United States in regional security and continue to work for regional peace and prosperity.
Tsai was speaking during a meeting with a U.S. delegation led by Republican National Committee (RNC) Co-chair Bob Paduchik.
She noted that the RNC has sent a delegation to Taiwan every year over the past several years, and she expressed confidence that such visits will help deepen U.S. understanding of Taiwan and enhance bilateral friendship, according to a statement released by the Presidential Office.
The president expressed the government's appreciation to the Republican Party for adopting a supportive stand for Taiwan in its 2016 platform, in which the party reiterated the Taiwan Relations Act as the basis of Taiwan-U.S. ties, affirmed the Six Assurances given to Taiwan in 1982 by then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan, and expressed support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations.
She said continued support and assistance from the United States is indispensable in Taiwan's efforts to expand its international space.
Taiwan has the will and ability to make more meaningful contribution to the international community and is willing to play a more positive role in maintaining regional peace and prosperity, she said.
Taiwan looks forward to deepening its partnership with the United States and to having more substantive cooperation and dialogue with Washington in areas such as counter-terrorism, humanitarian aid and defense investment, she said.
Lastly, she told Paduchik to convey her regards to U.S. President Donald Trump and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who visited Taiwan several times before assuming his present position.
