Taipei, May 23 (CNA) More than 12,000 people have so far used the K-Bike public rental bicycle system since its launch on April 16 in Kinmen County, officials said on Tuesday.

People can use the K-Bikes free of charge for the first four hours, with a cost of NT$10 (US$0.33) for every 30 minutes thereafter, or up to NT$150 a day, a discounted rate that will continue until the end of August. Rides for the first month of operation were absolutely free, said the county's Tourism Department.

There are 29 K-Bike pick-up and drop-off points around the island county, with 500 bicycles in service. Users can rent bikes at one service station and return them to any other 24 hours a day on the 150-square-kilometer county, which is located about 6 km from China's Fujian Province.

Users can pay the rental fee with a credit card, Taipei EasyCard, Kaohsiung I-Pass or China Union Pay card, which is a card issued by a Chinese state-owned financial services corporation and held by most Chinese tourists at home and abroad.

Kinmen and Matsu islands have been administered by the Republic of China government since it was defeated by the Chinese communists and moved to Taiwan in 1949.
