Hong Kong, June 4 (CNA) Rights activists in Hong Kong commemorated the anniversary of China's Tiananmen Square Incident at Victoria Park Sunday evening, an annual event that regularly attracts tens of thousands.
Pro-democracy supporters, including members of the public, gathered in downtown Hong Kong to mourn those that sacrificed their lives in the ultimate call for freedom and democracy in China 28 years ago.
They also seized the opportunity to call on the authorities in Beijing to end their interference in Hong Kong affairs, and affirm that the people of Hong Kong will always stand by democracy, human rights and freedom, according to the organizers of the event.
The incident on June 4, 1989, in which Chinese troops and tanks fired on civilians in Beijing's Tiananmen Square after weeks of pro-democracy protests, remains a taboo subject in China. Estimates at the number of people killed range from several hundred to several thousand.
