Torrential rains cause nearly NT$70 million in agricultural losses

Taipei, June 5 (CNA) Taiwan suffered NT$67.52 million (US$2.24 million) in agricultural losses over the past few days as a result of torrential rains brought by slow-moving weather fronts, the Council of Agriculture (COA) said, giving an estimate valid as of 11 a.m. Monday.

The losses of agricultural products amounted to NT$44.28 million, the COA said.

Yunlin County was the hardest hit municipality, with agricultural losses of NT$25.91 million, or 38 percent of the total, followed by New Taipei with NT$17.8 million and Nantou NT$9.58 million, the COA said.

Across the country, some 2,842 hectares of crops were damaged, 1,344 hectares of which were rice fields that accounted for NT$11.84 million in losses, while watermelon, corn, peanut and tomato cultivation was also hard hit, the COA said.

Meanwhile, poultry and livestock losses amounted to NT$8.49 million, while fishery losses totaled NT$1.76 million, the COA said.

Other losses were estimated at NT$12.98 million and included flooding or erosion of farm lands and damage to farm equipment, according to the COA.
