Taipei, June 6 (CNA) The workforce demand in Taiwan is expected to rise by 40,219 between May and July from the previous three months, a record high in eight quarters, due mainly to an economic recovery, the implementation of a two weekly days off policy and the peak hiring season in summer, according to a survey published Tuesday by the Ministry of Labor (MOL).
The survey was conducted between April 24 and May 12 among businesses with 30 or more employees, with a total of 3,049 valid samples collected.
The survey found that 24.9 percent of employers are willing to increase their workforce by the end of July, while 4.33 percent plan to reduce hiring of new employees, compared with the previous three months.
The total manpower demand from May to July is estimated at 47,850 workers, but demand for new employees will drop by 7,631, which means there is likely to be a net increase of 40,219 workers, a record eight-quarter high, according to the poll.
The manufacturing sector has the highest demand, with plans to increase the workforce by 16,139 in the May-July period, followed by the accommodation and catering industry, which plans to add 5,815 employees, and the wholesale and retail sector, which wants to hire 5,572 additional staff, the ministry said.
In terms of occupation, the demand for technicians, machine operators and assembly line workers is the highest, at about 11,600, followed by the demand for service industry personnel and salespeople at 10,700.
