Taipei, June 6 (CNA) China Airlines (CAL), one of Taiwan's two largest carriers, signed a declaration in Mexico on Monday to join international efforts to prevent illegal wildlife trafficking.

CAL Chairman Ho Nuan-hsuan signed the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce Buckingham Palace Declaration at the annual general meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a trade association of the world's air carriers.

CAL is one of 38 carriers to sign the declaration and the first Taiwanese airline to do so.

As a signatory, China Airlines will work with its peers and the government to help prevent the illegal trafficking and transportation of wildlife, Ho said.

He noted that CAL has made several efforts to participate in international environmental actions over the years. In addition, the airline banned the transportation of shark fins on Dec. 1, 2014 and banned the sale of dishes involving protected species at affiliated restaurants, Ho said.

Last year, the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce member organizations signed the Buckingham Palace Declaration in the United Kingdom.

The declaration commits signatories to developing information sharing or data systems so that the transport sector receives timely information about suspected illegal wildlife trade and can identify such trade more effectively.

Signatories are also committed to developing a secure system that enables them to pass on information about suspected wildlife trade to law enforcement authorities.
