Taipei, June 6 (CNA) Relations between Taiwan and Japan are expected to continue to grow, and will not be affected by Tokyo's hope of improving its ties with Beijing, a Taiwanese official responsible for ties with Japan said on Tuesday.

Chang Shu-ling, acting secretary-general of the Taipei-based Taiwan-Japan Relations Association, speaking at a regular news briefing, was responding to remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who expressed hope during a meeting with China's State Councilor Yang Jiechi in Tokyo May 31 of further developing Japan's ties with China, enhancing exchanges at all levels and deepening cooperation.

Chang said that as Japan seeks to develop its relations with other countries, it can also improve ties with Taiwan at the same time.

She noted that Abe has also said many times that Taiwan is an important partner for Japan. It is clear that the Abe administration values Japan's relations with Taiwan, she said, adding that bilateral ties are expected to continue to grow.

Taiwan and Japan have maintained close exchanges both at parliamentary and local levels, Chang said.

Chang noted that 24 Japanese parliamentarians have visited Taiwan so far this year and there have also been close exchanges between local governments from both sides.

The association, which handles ties with Japan, was renamed the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association in May, replacing the original Association of East Asian Relations, a name that had been used for about 45 years. The name change was in hope of encouraging closer ties between the two countries, according to Taiwanese foreign affairs officials.

It followed a similar move by Japan early this year, when Japan's Interchange Association was renamed the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association in January, in an effort to advance the already close relations between the two sides.
