Taipei, June 9 (CNA) Taiwan signed an open skies agreement with the Solomon Islands on Friday that paves the way for direct flights between the two countries, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) said.

The pact, the 57th open skies agreement Taiwan has sealed, was signed by Transportation and Communications Minister Ho Chen Tan and his Solomon Islands counterpart Peter Shanel Agovaka, the CAA said.

Under the agreement, the two countries will be able to each designate one or more airlines to offer direct services between Taiwan and the Solomon Islands, one of Taiwan's diplomatic allies in the South Pacific, the CAA said.

Flights connecting the two countries will be allowed to stop at any mid-point location or fly on to a third destination, and there will be no limit to the number of passenger or cargo flights on the route, the CAA said.

In the future, the designated carriers will be able to open new routes based on market demand or cooperate with the other side through codeshares, the agency noted.

At present, passengers who want to travel between Taiwan and the Solomon Islands by air must transfer in Australia.

Taiwanese airlines did not immediately react to the agreement and it is not immediately known whether they would find flights to the Solomon Islands commercially interesting.
