Taipei, June 9 (CNA) Agricultural losses in Taiwan from days of torrential rain last weekend totaled NT$270 million (US$8.95 million), the Council of Agriculture (COA) said Friday.

The crop losses and damage to farm and aquaculture facilities caused by torrential rains from June 2 to 4 amounted to NT$271.15 million, the COA said in its latest and final report on the losses caused by the downpours.

Nantou County in central Taiwan suffered the heaviest losses at NT$75.13 million, or 28 percent of the national total, it said.

Neighboring Yunlin County reported NT$52.76 million in agricultural losses, followed by Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan at NT$23.73 million and New Taipei in northern Taiwan at NT$23.44 million, the COA said.

Crop damage accounted for most of the losses, with 6,130 hectares of farmland and NT$185.09 million in crops damaged, the COA said.

Watermelon farmers took the biggest hit, suffering crop losses of NT$29.27 million and damage to 486 hectares of farmland, it said. Other crops hurt by the heavy rain were rice, peanuts, persimmons and ginger, it added.

Meanwhile, the livestock sector suffered NT$8.11 million in losses, largely due to the death of chickens, geese and pigs, and losses to fish products totaled NT$3.49 million, the COA said.

Other losses were estimated at NT$74.45 million, from factors such as flooding or erosion of farmland, and damage to farm and aquaculture sector facilities, the COA said.
