Taipei, June 11 (CNA) More than 2,000 migrant workers and immigrants from the Philippines took part in a road run to celebrate Philippine National Day in New Taipei on Sunday.

The event, which was called the "119th Philippine Independence, Migrant Workers' Day and Filcom Fun Run," included a 3km run, 5km run and a garden party. It was held to celebrate the 119th anniversary of the nation's declaration of independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, in a riverside park in the city's Yonghe District and was co-hosted by New Taipei City and the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), the Philippine Representative Office in Taiwan.
New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu said international migrant workers and domestic carers have made a great contribution to local manufacturing and building industries, as well as helped care centers and families in the city.

The city has previously organized events to celebrate Christmas, Migrant's Day, Independence Day, and Pangbenga Festival for Filipino workers, which promotes cultural diversity, said Chu.

Angelito Banayo, chairman and CEO of MECO, was also in attendance.

There are 90,328 foreign workers and domestic helpers in New Taipei, of which 12,622 are from the Philippines, according to the city. In addition, 1,469 immigrants in New Taipei are also from the Philippines, said the city.

Filipino singer Kristine Zhenie Tandingan, known as KZ, and other entertainers performed at the event.
