Taipei, June 11 (CNA) Athletes competing in the upcoming Taipei Universiade will be treated to Taiwanese fried chicken, Mediterranean lamb chop, Indian rogan josh, Halal food and, of course, vegetarian meals, according to menus made available to the media Sunday.

Organizers said restaurants at the athlete village have a rotating 7-day meal plan, in addition to regular supply of drinks, cold food, fruits and bread to satisfy the needs and palates of athletes from all around the world.

Yang Ching-tang, a spokesman for the Aug. 19-30 Taipei Universiade, said main items on the Taiwanese food menu include dough stick with shaobing (sesame flat bread) that goes with soymilk for breakfast, xiaolong tangbao (steamed Chinese meat bun), beef noodle, bawan (Taiwanese meat ball), yamsogei (deep fried chicken), ta-a noodle (shoulder-pole noodle).

Other Asian dishes on the menu will be Indonesian fried noodle, South Asia nasi briyani (tumeric rice), Hokkien-style vegetable noddle, shumai (Cantonese dim sum), and hand mutton/dried fish rice.

European and Mediterranean foods include Moroccan tajine, shepherd's pie, tomato fennel salsa fish, German sausage, sirloin steak, Italian pasta, lasagna, and Hawaii piazza.

A special cooking area has been set up to prepare strictly Halal food. It will offer foods in two main styles: African and Indian. On the menu you will find chana masala, saag gosht, smoked chicken, rogan josh and so on.
