London, June 14 (CNA) National Taiwan University's ranking in a global survey of university reputation went up after slipping for two years in a row, according to the results of the survey announced Wednesday by British magazine Times Higher Education.

NTU's ranking improved to the 51-60 tier in 2017, up from the 81-90 tier last year, the 61-70 tier in 2015, and returned back to the same level it was in 2013 and 2014, according to the magazine.

NTU was still the only university in Taiwan to make the top 100.

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings, a spin-off of its annual World University Rankings, are based on a survey of 10,500 scholars from 137 countries.

The improvement in the rankings reflects NTU's successful bid in globalization, said Lee Fang-jen, head of NTU's Office of Research and Development

Lee said the school has been striving for participation in global academia, including promoting exchange programs for international students and scholars.

In the Times' list, Harvard University had the best reputation among the world's universities for the seventh straight year.

Following Harvard University in the top 10 are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University, with the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom sharing fourth spot.

Rounding out the top 10 are the University of California at Berkeley, Princeton University, Yale University, the University of Chicago and the California Institute of Technology.

The University of Tokyo was the best in Asia, ranking 11th, up one place from last year.

Two Chinese universities saw their rankings in the top 20: Tsinghua University's ranking improved four notches from 18th to 14th, while Peking University's ranking jumped from 21st to 17th.
