Taipei, June 15 (CNA) An automated traffic law-enforcement system installed in the Hsuehshan Tunnel on Freeway No. 5 was officially launched Thursday, with the first violation involving a motorist caught speeding at 122 kilometers per hour.

The system in the 12.9 km-long tunnel on the freeway connecting Taipei and Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan uses a total of 16 cameras, eight each on the north-bound and south-bound carriageways of the tunnel.

It is mainly targeted at vehicles that are speeding, tailgating, changing lanes in the tunnel, or traveling below the minimum speed limit recently increased to 70 kph, freeway police said.

The maximum speed limit in the tunnel is currently set at 90 kph, but only motorists driving at over 100 kph will be issued a ticket, they said.

The fine is at least NT$3,000 for speeding, between NT$3,000 and NT$6,000 for changing lanes or driving too slowly, and between NT$6,000 and NT$24,000 for tailgating, according to the police.

Just 18 minutes after the system was launched, a motorist was detected speeding at 122 kph in the tunnel, they said.

The violation has been confirmed manually and will result in a fine of NT$3,500, they added.
