Taipei, June 15 (CNA) The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) on Thursday urged Taiwanese politicians planning to take part in two upcoming forums in China to honestly reflect the voice of Taiwanese people, by taking a concerted stand at a time when Beijing is stepping up its efforts to isolate Taiwan.

The MAC was referring to the 2017 Cross-Strait Forum scheduled for June 17-23 in Fujian and the annual twin-city forum between Taipei and Shanghai, likely to take place in Shanghai in July.

The outgoing Kuomintang Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu will address the opening of the Cross-Strait Forum on June 18 and Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je reportedly plans to attend the twin-city forum.

Some critics have argued that their participation is inappropriate when China has just persuaded long-time ally Panama to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Commenting on the issue, MAC Vice Minister Chiu Chui-cheng said the government's position on cross-strait people-to-people exchanges remains unchanged, but it believes all of Taiwan's political parties as well as other sectors will take a concerted stand in the face of China's efforts to de-legitimize the nation.

If important opinion leaders from Taiwan plan to attend these events, they should ensure their Chinese hosts are in no doubt as to the view of the Taiwanese people, Chiu said.

According to an itinerary released by the KMT, in addition to attending the forum, Hung will also meet with Yu Zhengsheng chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Zhang Zhijun, head of China's Taiwan Affairs Office, during her trip.
