Taipei mayor to ignite Universiade flame in Italy

Taipei, June 17 (CNA) Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je will lead a delegation to Turin, Italy next Monday to light the flame for the Summer Universiade in Taipei.

Ko will speak at the ceremony where the Universiade flame will be lit on Tuesday night Taipei time before passing the flame to Taiwan's torch bearers, who will pass through Naples, Bangkok and Daegu in South Korea before arriving at Taiwan on June 29.

The torch will then make its to Jade Mountain, Taiwan's highest peak at 3,952 meters, before traveling around Taiwan.

In addition to lighting the flame, Ko is expected to meet with Italian lawmakers and Turin's mayor and visit historic buildings in the city before returning to Taipei on June 22.

The Universiade (World University Games) will take place Aug. 18-30.
