Taipei, June 19 (CNA) The Ministry of Labor on Monday encouraged employers to allow their Muslim workers to observe Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Ramadan on June 25, the Islamic holy month of dawn-to-dusk fasting.
Eid al-Fitr is an important holiday for Muslims, like Lunar New Year in the Chinese-speaking community, and it is a celebration of peace and joy after Ramadan, during which Muslims abstain from food and drink during the day while continuing to perform their duties, the ministry said.
It is crucial that employers respect the religious beliefs of their foreign workers so as to create a more harmonious relationship between labor and management, the labor ministry said.
Meanwhile, the Taipei City government will hold an Eid al-Fitr celebration at Taipei Travel Plaza near Taipei Main Station on June 25, according to the city's Foreign and Disabled Labor Office.
Taiwan is home to some 252,000 Indonesian workers, 85 percent of whom are Muslims, data from the labor ministry shows.
