Taipei, June 21 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen expressed hopes that the relations between Taiwan and Honduras will be further strengthened and that the free trade pact between the two nations, which took effect in 2008, will contribute in a maximum manner to the development of the bilateral trade and economic cooperation, creating a win-win situation for the two sides.

Speaking at a meeting with Honduras' First Vice President Ricardo Antonio Alvarez Arias and members of his delegation at the Presidential Office, Tsai said that Taiwan and Honduras have maintained friendly relations for 75 years and that she and her Honduran counterpart Juan Orlando Hernandez have met in three different occasions since she assumed the office in May of last year.

During these meetings, Tsai said, she and President Hernandez exchanged concrete opinions on a great variety of issues related with the promotion of bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation.

Over the past year, Taiwan's public and private sectors organized several trade missions to visit Honduras and have made a great number of purchases of its products, particularly coffee, Tsai said, adding that Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare and Council of Agriculture are now working actively with due process for allowing the imports of Honduras' beef, melon and other agricultural products.

Tsai extended a warm welcome to Vice President Alvarez and his delegation, assuring that they will see in person the sincerity and efforts made by Taiwan in eliminating trade barriers existing between the two nations during their current visit.

She also thanked Honduras for supporting Taiwan's participation in international organizations and activities over the past years, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the World Health Organization.

Heading a five-member delegation, Alvarez arrived in Taiwan Tuesday for a six-day visit. During their stay in Taiwan, the Honduras visitors are visiting important economic and cultural establishments in the island and meeting with senior government officials, in addition to attending the 2017 Taipei International Food Show that was inaugurated Tuesday in Taipei and will run through June 24.
