Taipei, June 24 (CNA) A documentary about children of Southeast Asian immigrants reconnecting with their families premiered Saturday in Taipei.
The film follows six children as they travel to their parents' homes in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam and meet and get to know their relatives there.
It was filmed under a program initiated by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
The program not only allows second-generation immigrants to find their roots, but also gives them an opportunity to connect with Southeast Asia by learning about their parents' lives there, said DPP legislator Lee Li-feng, who is secretary general of the Immigrant Affairs Development Alliance, a subgroup of the DPP caucus in the Legislature.
Tsai Wan-fen, director of the DPP Women's Affairs Department who organized the Taipei premiere, said that the program is aimed at helping second-generation immigrants independently seek their roots in a free and open manner.
"We hope that the vision of young second-generation immigrants will lead Taiwanese to learn more about Southeast Asia," she said.
Following the premiere in Taipei, the documentary will be screened in Taichung and Kaohsiung, as well as in schools, with the aim of encouraging more young second-generation immigrants to seek their roots, Tsai said.
