Taipei, June 24 (CNA) Taiwanese singer Sangpuy Katatepan won the Album of the Year, the night's biggest award, at the Golden Melody Awards in Taipei Saturday with his album "Yaangad."
"Thank you, my ancestors. Thank you, God," Sangpuy said during his acceptance speech.
The singer, a member of the indigenous Puyuma tribe who is known for singing the ancient tunes of his tribe, also thanked his tribe for providing the "nutrients" for his music.
"Thank you, Taiwan, our land, for giving us such beautiful culture, languages and music," he added.
"Yaangad" also picked up awards in the categories of Best Vocalist--Aboriginal Language and Best Vocal Recording Album Award.
The album was competing against 23 other titles for Album of the Year, a new category that was created this year to select the best album, regardless of whether it's in Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka or indigenous languages.
The contenders included all nominated titles for Best Album in Mandarin, Best Album in Taiwanese, Best Album in Hakka and Best Album in an Aboriginal Language, as well as band No Party for Cao Dong's "The Servile" and Sheng-xiang band's "Village Besieged."
