Taipei, June 27 (CNA) Taiwan's Presidential Office on Tuesday urged China to show tolerance for democracy activists and protect their human rights in the wake of news that 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo is on medical parole for treatment of late-stage liver cancer.
The Presidential Office calls on China to guarantee basic human rights protections for individuals who peacefully advocate political reforms and democratic development, said office spokesman Alex Huang.
The office is closely following Liu's case, Huang said, and it hopes the activist can receive proper medical treatment to regain his health.
The Liaoning Prison Administrative Bureau confirmed Monday that the 61-year-old has been given medical parole and is currently being treated at China Medical University No. 1 Affiliated Hospital.
He was incarcerated as a political prisoner in Jinzhou, Liaoning Province, after being given an 11-year sentence in Dec. 2009.
Liu was thrown behind bars on charges of masterminding the 1989 Tiananmen "riots" following the brutal suppression of massive protests in June that year.
He was sent to jail again in 2009 on charges of inciting others to subvert state power for his role in drafting the "Charter 08" manifesto.
