Chi Po-lin, director of winner of the 50th Golden Horse award for best documentary for Beyond Beauty: TAIWAN FROM ABOVE was tragically killed in a helicopter crash recently, leaving behind scenes of unparalleled beauty and sorrow in his film. From May 20 last year, the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) has, on many occasions, arranged for overseas youth, overseas Chinese school teachers and reporters from Chinese language media to watch this film in cinemas to create an emotional connection between them and Taiwan.

OCAC Deputy Minister Tien Chiu-Chin said that, in various activities, the OCAC has led compatriots to cinemas to see Beyond Beauty: TAIWAN FROM ABOVE. It has been very warmly received and has touched all who have seen it.

She said smilingly that some people regard the film as a political propaganda film.“We must emphasize that it is not.” She continued, “Beyond Beauty: TAIWAN FROM ABOVE”  shows Taiwan as it really is, not only allowing compatriots who grew up overseas to emotionally connect with their homeland, also surprising many people born and brought up in Taiwan. The film’s most captivating aspect is that it shows both Taiwan’s beauty and its wounds.

She went on to say that some people might ask “Why let other people see a bad side of Taiwan?” Tien believes that this willingness shows the strength of Taiwan’s democratic society and, moreover, only by facing problems can they be solved. In a short period of time, Beyond Beauty shows viewers Taiwan’s soft power and its spirit.

Tien said that Chi Po-lin has left Taiwan a precious asset and the OCAC will continue with his unfinished mission, support the spirit of protecting the land, and continue to let more compatriots see the real Taiwan.
