TSMC ranked world's 45th-most valuable firm in 2017

Taipei, June 28 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) was ranked the world's 45th-most valuable company by market capitalization in 2017, up three notches from last year, according to an annual report published by accounting firm PWC on Wednesday.

As of March 31, 2017, TSMC's market capitalization stood at US$161 billion, an increase of US$31 billion, or 24 percent, from last year, the Global Top 100 Companies by Market Capitalization report said.

TSMC is the only Taiwanese company to feature on the list.

This year, the total market capitalization of the top 100 global companies was US$17.4 trillion, up US$1.861 trillion, or 12 percent, from 2016, the report showed.

Of the 100 companies listed, 55 were from the United States and 22 from Europe.

All the top 10 companies on the list were from the United States, with tech giant Apple Inc. taking the No. 1 position for the sixth consecutive year with market capitalization of US$754 billion, it said.

In second place was Alphabet (Google), followed by Microsoft, Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and Facebook, according to the report.

Completing the top 10 were Exxon Mobil, Johnson & Johnson, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo, in that order, it said.
