Taipei, June 30 (CNA) Bike riders in Taipei will be fined NT$300 (US$10) if they ride on sidewalks outside of established bike lanes starting on July 17, the Taipei City government said Friday.
City officials said riders will be required to stick to designated bike lanes, and if such a lane does not exist, they will have to ride in the slow lane of the city street.
Once the new regulations take effect, they will be first enforced in areas that have well-defined bike lanes, such as on Xinyi, Renai, Roosevelt and Xinsheng South roads, officials said.
The city's Department of Transportation had originally planned to put the new regulations into practice on July 1.
But it decided to delay the launch date by two weeks after Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je said he himself wasn't aware of the new rules and asked transportation officials to step up publicity of the measure.
