Taipei, July 3 (CNA) Taiwanese infielder Lin Tzu-wei continued his run in the Major Leagues Sunday with three hits for the Boston Red Sox, in the club's 15-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The 23-year-old, who was promoted from Double-A Portland to Boston's 40-man roster on June 24, is the first out of a total of 13 Taiwanese players to end up with three hits in a single Major League Baseball (MLB) game.
In his nine days in the Major Leagues, Lin has set other records besides being called up directly from a double-A Minor League team. They include his being the fastest among Taiwanese-born MLB players to reach first base on a hit.
He is also the only MLB infielder from Taiwan to date, playing the position of third baseman, second baseman or shortstop.
During the game at Rogers Centre, Toronto, on Sunday afternoon, Lin hit a triple, a bunt single and another single in his five times at bat. He had one line-out and struck out once.
Taiwanese players who have had two hits in an MLB game include Hu Chin-lung, Lin Che-hsuan-- both of whom are no longer active MLB players -- and Lin Tzu-wei.
Since June 24, the native from Taiwan's southern city of Kaohsiung has played in eight games in the MLB, hitting a batting average of .333. He hit his first career triple on June 29.
With Marlins pitcher Chen Wei-yin on the disabled list since May 3 due to an elbow injury, Lin is the only active MLB player from Taiwan and has been the focus of Taiwan's sports news in recent days.
