Taipei, July 3 (CNA) New Central News Agency Chairman Liu Ka-shiang on Monday outlined new directions for the national news agency, which he said will include adjusting its overseas network.

Liu, a poet and conservationist, took over as chairman of the news agency at a handover ceremony Monday from Chen Kuo-hsiang, who stepped down after completing his second of two three-year terms.

Liu expressed the hope that the news agency will not slowly plod forward on its new path, but be as adaptable as the Transformer robots or as versatile as Taiwan's Major League Baseball star Lin Tzu-wei, who can play multiple positions.

The new chairman noted the biggest difference between CNA and other local media outlets is its overseas network, but with rapid changes in the Internet age, the news agency has to adjust its overseas locations and the writing style of its journalists.

He expressed the hope that CNA's journalists can more clearly project Taiwan's perspective while also working to make Taiwan's voice heard in the international community.

He also wants to strengthen coverage of artistic and cultural groups, which he said will expand Taiwan's soft power, and have CNA take full advantage of the digital age by improving its video news and photo services for its audience.
