Taipei, July 3 (CNA) The National Palace Museum on Monday sealed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Taipei with San Francisco's Asian Art Museum to forge a sister museum relationship, enabling the two sides to cooperate closely on research and exhibition exchanges.

The agreement was signed by NPM Director Lin Jeng-yi and Jay Xu, director of the Asian Art Museum, and witnessed by American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) official Jesse Curtis.

Founded in 1966, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco currently houses one of the most comprehensive Asian art collections in the world, with more than 18,000 works of art in its permanent collection, some as many as 6,000 years old.

According to Lin, the relationship between the NPM and Asian Art Museum goes back to 1961, when the two first collaborated to have works from NPM's collection exhibited in San Francisco.

That event alone attracted more than 500,000 visitors, he said.

Two more exhibitions were held at the Asian Art Museum in 1996 and 2016, both of which also proved to be a huge hit with the American public.

Considered the first such pact Lin has signed since taking office last year, the agreement is part of the NPM's efforts to strengthen its international cooperation with reputable museums around the world, Lin said.

"The MOU signing between the NPM and the Asian Art Museum today is only the beginning of our drive to forge ties with other museums around the world," he said.
