Taipei, July 5 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday condemned North Korea's firing a day earlier of a ballistic missile with a range of about 933 kilometers, urging Pyongyang to stop any moves that could undermine security in the region.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Republic of China government "strongly condemned" North Korea's action and was highly concerned about the move.

It called on North Korea to abide by related United Nations Security Council resolutions and "immediately cease any move that could undermine regional security to jointly maintain peace, stability and prosperity on the Korean peninsula and East Asia."

The ministry's statement came after North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency reported the previous day the "successful test-firing of intercontinental ballistic rocket Hwasong-14" that same day.

Following the firing of the long-range missile toward the Sea of Japan, South Korea condemned the North Korean action. The test also triggered a protest from Japan, calls from China to show restraint and from the U.S. for a global action to hold Pyongyang accountable for pursuing nuclear weapons, foreign media reported.

Some experts believe that the missile has the range to reach the U.S. state of Alaska, the reports said.
