Taipei, July 5 (CNA) Civic groups in Taiwan will soon announce their next move to support Taiwanese human rights and pro-democracy advocate Lee Ming-che who has been detained in China for more than three months for alleged "subversion of state power."

Lee, a former Democratic Progressive Party worker, staff member at Wenshan Community College in Taipei and a volunteer at the local NGO Covenants Watch, was detained by China after entering Zhuhai City via Macau on March 19.

China confirmed later that Lee is being held in Hunan province.

Chiu E-ling, secretary general of the Taiwan Association for Human Rights, said the European Parliament plans to vote a resolution to support Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo and Lee Ming-che on Thursday.

If the European Parliament passes the resolution, its executive branch could take further action based on the decision, Chiu said.

She said that the groups supporting Lee will hold a press conference over the next few days after the vote.

Chiu noted that Covenants Watch, with the consent of Lee's family, has solicited assistance through the "special procedure" mechanism of the United Nations - Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Special Repporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders, Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, and Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances.

The Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances took on Lee's case on June 23 and will conduct an official investigation, Chiu said.

The working group will also invite Lee's family and representatives from Covenants Watch to its 113th session in Geneva in September to report on the case.

In addition, Chiu said that several non-governmental organizations will hold an event in New Taipei to mark the second anniversary of China's crackdown on human rights lawyers and activists on July 9, 2015.

A documentary "709 Fellows" by veteran journalist Lo King-wah will also be aired at the event to support Lee and other detainees.
