Taipei, July 7 (CNA) Taiwan's exports returned to double-digit growth in June, largely on the back of solid global demand for electronic devices and machinery, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said Friday.

In June, Taiwan's outbound sales rose 13 percent from a year earlier to US$25.83 billion after an 8.4 percent year-on-year increase in May and a 9.3 percent rise in April, data compiled by the MOF shows. In March, Taiwan's exports grew 13.1 percent from a year earlier.

The data indicates that Taiwan's exports grew in June for the ninth consecutive month.

Taiwan's imports in June meanwhile totaled NT$20 billion, up 3.7 percent from a year earlier, while the trade surplus stood at US$5.83 billion, up US$2.26 billion from last year, the MOF said.

In terms of the whole second quarter, Taiwan's exports rose 10.2 percent from a year earlier to US$75.66 billion. And for the first six months of the year, outbound sales grew 12.5 percent year-on-year to US$147.75 billion.

In June, Taiwan's electronics component exports rose 19.5 percent from a year earlier to US$8.89 billion with semiconductors outbound sales up 22.8 percent year-on-year at US$7.69 billion at a time when the momentum of the global integrated circuit market persisted, the MOF said.

Exports of information/communications devices totaled US$2.93 billion in June, up 17.2 percent, with optical lens sales up 25 percent and smartphone parts sales up 32 percent when international smartphone brands were building their inventories, the MOF added.

Tsai Mei-na, director of the MOF's statistics department, said that the increase in high-tech device exports came in line with a global economic recovery. In addition, a planned launch of the next generation iPhones also boosted shipments of Taiwan's suppliers to Apple Inc., Tsai said.

In June, machinery exports from Taiwan totaled US$2.02 billion, up 16.8 percent from a year earlier, while outbound sales of rubber and chemical items rose 13.3 percent and 5.9 percent, respectively, to US$1.86 billion and US$1.47 billion, the MOF's data showed.

The data indicated that Taiwan's exports to China and Hong Kong in June rose 21 percent from a year earlier to US$10.44 billion and outbound sales to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) grew 12.5 percent to about US$4.8 billion.

Meanwhile, exports to Japan, the United States and Europe for June rose 6.8 percent, 7.0 percent and 7.3 percent, respectively, from a year earlier to US$1.72 billion, US$3.12 billion and US$2.32 billion.

Looking ahead, Tsai said she remained upbeat about Taiwan's exports for the second half of the year, but she said it was hard to register a double digit increase with the growth likely to be capped due to a relatively high comparison base over the same period of last year.
