Manila, July 8 (CNA) Several Taiwanese universities established partnerships with counterparts in the Philippines during a recent trip to the Southeast Asian country aimed at promoting bilateral educational and academic exchanges.

A delegation of 17 representatives from nine universities in southern Taiwan attended a conference held by the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) from July 5-6, according to Taiwan's representative office in Manila.

During the conference, the Taiwanese universities actively sought to promote cooperation with Philippine universities and colleges.

One result was an agreement between Pingtung County's Tajen University and Southern Luzon State University in the Philippines on training teachers in nursing, catering and AI robotics, which will take effect in July 2018.

National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences also explored the possibility of sending teachers from Southern Luzon State University to study master's or doctoral degrees at the Taiwanese university.

Other examples included National Kaohsiung Marine University establishing partnerships with the University of the Philippines System and other institutions under PASUC, to promote exchanges in fisheries and aquaculture, and the existing exchange platform between Shu-Te University in Kaohsiung and the University of the Philippines System and PASUC to advance regional educational cooperation.

Meanwhile, Kaohsiung Medical University discussed an exchange program with the University of the Philippines Manila and academic and student exchange programs with other Philippine universities.

The representative office in Manila said that such partnerships between Taiwanese and Philippine universities will not only help promote bilateral exchanges in faculty and students, but also help improve the English language ability of Taiwanese university teachers and students.

The new cooperative partnerships come amid the efforts of Taiwan's government to promote its New Southbound Policy, aimed at advancing ties with Southeast and South Asian countries.
