Taipei, July 9 (CNA) Two inbound Taiwanese passengers had US$380,000 in cash confiscated by customs officials at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport after they were found attempting to bring the undeclared US currency into the country, the Taipei Customs Office said Sunday.

The passengers, both male, were identified only as a 26-year-old surnamed Chiang (江) and a 23-year-old whose surname is Chen by the office.

The duo flew back to Taiwan from Macao on Saturday evening. At about 11 p.m. they were asked by a customs official to open their hand luggage at a customs check point in Terminal 1. It was then that the undeclared U.S. currency was found.

The customs office said the inbound passengers were both carrying US$200,000 in cash in their luggage.

The recently-amended Money Laundering Control Act stipulates that passenger are allowed to enter Taiwan with no more than US$10,000 worth of foreign currency. As a result, officials confiscated the additional cash.

The office urged passengers to pay close attention to laws and regulations governing the amount of currency allowed to be carried by inbound or outbound passengers.

Under Taiwan's Money Laundering Control Act, which was revised on June 28, passengers are banned from carrying more than US$10,000 in foreign currency, more than NT$100,000 in Taiwan dollars, or more than 20,000 Chinese yuan when leaving or entering Taiwan.
