Taipei, July 10 (CNA) The university system headed by National Taiwan University (NTU) has signed a cooperation memorandum with Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, setting a milestone in higher education cooperation between Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

The memorandum was signed recently at the Vietnamese university after the two sides decided to promote their future cooperative relations, NTU System President Chang Ching-ray said on Monday.

The two sides have not just agreed on many cooperative programs and the promotion of exchanges of students and teachers, but have also promised to conduct joint academic research and set up scholarships, Chang said.

He praised the deal between NTU System and Vietnam National University as an important accord on academic cooperation between the higher education sectors of the two sides, and a crucial milestone in the higher education cooperation between Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

NTU System comprises NTU, National Taiwan Normal University and National Taiwan University of Science.

According to Chang, Vietnam National University was founded in 1995 on the basis of a merger of nine universities. With more than 60,000 undergraduates and 10,000 graduate students, it is on a similar scale as NTU System, Chang said.
