London, July 11 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis sisters Chan Yung-jan and Chan Hao-ching both reached the women's doubles quarterfinals at Wimbledon on Monday, setting career bests for the only Grand Slam tournament played on grass.
Chan Yung-jan and Martina Hingis of Switzerland, seeded third in the tournament, rolled past India's Sania Mirza and Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 12 minutes.
The duo, which has not dropped a set so far in the tournament, will next play 12th seeds Anna-Lena Groenfeld of Germany and Kveta Peschke of Czechia for a spot in the semifinals.
Chan Hao-ching and Monica Niculescu of Romania fought past the unseeded pairing of Haddad Maia of Brazil and Ana Konjuh of Croatia, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 in their third round match in one hour and 59 minutes and will next face the unseeded duo of Catherine Bellis of the U.S. and Marketa Vondrousova of Czechia.
It was the first time that either of the Chan sisters, who played together for much of 2016, had gotten past the third round at Wimbledon. Both are gunning for their first grand slam titles.
Chan Yung-jan's match on Monday was notable in that it pitted former doubles partners Hingis and Mirza against each other.
The two won three Grand Slams together -- the U.S. Open and Wimbledon in 2015, and the Australian Open in 2016 -- in addition to the 2015 WTA Finals and won 41 straight matches during that spell but then lost some of their magic and split in August 2016.
Hingis began partnering with Chan in February. The pair has performed well, winning at Indian Wells on hard courts and at Madrid and Rome on clay, and they are considered among the favorites at Wimbledon.
