Kuala Lumpur, July 11 (CNA) In an effort to expand international markets for fresh farm produce, Taiwan is holding a trade fair in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia to promote local fruit and vegetables.
The Taiwan Fresh Produce Fair opened at the Aeon Bandar Utama shopping center last Saturday, since when it has drawn crowds of visitors, said Taiwan's representative office to Malaysia in a statement released on Tuesday.
Taiwan-grown fresh produce was used in cookery demonstrations at the fair, serving dishes that meet the taste of Malaysian people, such as chicken salad with mango, guava and grapes. After tasting the food, many visitors gave the thumbs up to the high quality of Taiwanese fruit and vegetables.
Chang Ming, chief of the office's economic affairs division, recommended farm produce from Changhua County in central Taiwan.
Touting Changhua as Taiwan's breadbasket, Chang said the county is known for producing a wide range of farm produce, including grapes, guavas, mangoes and mushrooms.
According to data from the representative office, fruit and vegetable exports from Taiwan to Malaysia were valued at US$1.02 million in 2016, including US$575,000 in fruit and US$450,000 in vegetables.
In the first four months of this year, fruit and vegetable exports to Malaysia were valued at US$351,000, representing year-on-year growth of 2.7 percent, the data shows.
