Taipei, July 11 (CNA) Relations between Taiwan and Paraguay have always been deep-rooted, despite the long geographic distance between the two countries, President Tsai Ing-wen said in a welcoming speech Tuesday for Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes.

Tsai greeted Cartes and his delegation warmly upon their arrival at the Taipei Guest House, where a national banquet was held in their honor.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties, Tsai said the two sides will push for more mutually beneficial cooperation programs for the benefit of the people of both nations.

"Let us toast to our long-standing friendship," she said.

During the banquet, guests were offered a combination of Taiwanese signature dishes, including traditional noodle soup, oyster omelets and bubble milk tea, as well as barbecued dishes made from Paraguayan beef.

A folk music performance by Paraguayan guitarist Roberto Zayas was also given at the reception to welcome Cartes and his delegation, which comprised Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga, Industry and Commerce Minister Gustavo Leite, and other government officials and parliamentarians.

On Wednesday, Tsai will officially welcome Cartes with full military honors, including a 21-gun salute, and host a national banquet in his honor.

A series of activities has also been arranged for Cartes and his delegation to celebrate the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.
