Paris, July 13 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen was featured in an article recently published by L'Express, a Paris-based weekly news magazine.

The article is titled: "Tsai Ing-wen, the rebel," in its printed version, while the title is "Taiwan: Tsai Ing-wen, the president who defies Beijing" in the online version.

The article was part of a special summer series rolled out by the journal, focusing on reports of the most powerful and influential women in Asia.

The report says that Beijing describes Taiwan as a mere rebellious province and constantly isolates Taiwan on the international scene.

Beijing's suppression of Taiwan's international space seems to be successful, the article says, evidenced by the fact that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China in 1979, no U.S. president had spoken to a Taiwanese head of state until 2016.

Shortly after Donald Trump's election as U.S. president in November 2016, he stunned Beijing by taking a call from Tsai, who wanted to congratulate him, the article notes.

It says that the 60-year-old Tsai was elected as Taiwan's president in January last year, making her the first woman elected to the office.

According to the article, most of Taiwan hopes that Tsai will not cave in to pressure from Beijing.
