Taipei, July 16 (CNA) Passengers with electronic devices flying to the United States will undergo extra security screening at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport beginning Monday to comply with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) new flight security plan.
Under the new plan, electronic devices larger in size than a mobile phone -- including tablet computers, laptops, DVD players and cameras -- taken in carry-on luggage on direct flights to the U.S. are to be screened before passengers arrive at the boarding gate.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) said the screening is conducted randomly, and passengers will not know whether they will be chosen until they get ready to board.
It said the screening procedure will take up about three minutes for each passenger, and it hoped that passengers can adhere to the new rules.
The CAA suggested that passengers pack their electronic devices in their checked luggage to avoid potential delays before boarding.
Taoyuan International Airport carried out a drill on July 14 to test the new measures ahead of their formal introduction July 17, which is ahead of the July 19 deadline required by TSA, the CAA said.
