Taipei, July 17 (CNA) A police officer, a native of Yunlin County, has become the first Taiwanese female officer to receive a scholarship from the International Association of Women Police (IAWP), the Yunlin County Police Bureau said Monday.

The IAWP, a global organization aimed at strengthening, uniting and raising the profile of women in criminal justice, provides its International Recognition and Scholarship Program to a serving police woman from outside of North America each year.

According to Hsu Hsi-jung, commissioner of the Yunlin County Police Bureau, the 2017 IAWP scholarship was awarded to Chang Wei-jung, who currently serves as an officer for the National Police Agency's International Affairs Division in Taipei.

Chang, who hails from Yunlin County, is a 20-year veteran officer who has been dedicated to the prevention of domestic violence and child abuse in Taiwan, Hsu said.

Besides educating other police officers in building their capacity to investigate and handle domestic violence cases, she has also worked in a number of assignments throughout her career, including the push for human trafficking prevention.

She is the pride of Yunlin County as well as the nation's police force, said Hsu.

According to the IAWP, the scholarship recipient will attend the Annual IAWP Training Conference, which is held in a different location each year.

The aim of the conference is to increase the understanding of the roles of women officers in various countries, and to promote the international understanding and awareness of women in law enforcement.

Chang is set to attend the 55th Annual Conference in Cairns, Australia from Sept 17-21, it said.
