On the morning of July 9, Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Minister Wu Hsin-Hsing shared compatriot affairs policies and his views on the current state of Taiwan in a meeting with compatriots at the Taiwanese American Center of Northern California in San José U.S.A..

Talking of the political situation in Taiwan at present, Wu said that the DPP government has tried hard since coming to power; however, the going has been very tough while getting rid of old policies to make way for new ones at the same time. He pointed out that President Tsai Ing-Wen said before coming to office: “The people won’t give DPP much time to orient itself after returning to power because Taiwan needs to change now.”

With regard to the New Southbound policy, he said that, as well as emphasizing trade and investment exchanges practiced for years, the policy also attaches importance to education, culture, tourism, medical care, and other areas where Taiwan has advantages. “These should all build momentum for the expansion of Taiwan’s external relations.” He said, “China is important, but we can’t put all our eggs in one basket.”

Around 100 compatriots were present at the meeting and many asked questions and offered their opinions. One of them, Chiunn-Shyung Yeh, mentioned the issue of the ratio of pan-Green and pan-Blue OCAC Commissioners; at present the ratio is 3:7, with all Bay Area Commissioners pan-Blue. Wu stated that, when new OCAC Commissioners are appointed next year, he will do his best to make the number of pan-Green and pan-Blue Commissioners equal.
