Taipei, July 20 (CNA) Guatemala's foreign minister arrived in Taiwan Thursday on a two-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that day.

Carlos Raul Morales was scheduled to meet with Foreign Minister David Lee to exchange views on strengthening relations between the two countries, the ministry said in a statement.

At the Central American ally's request, the ministry said that the visiting minister will also have an opportunity to learn about Taiwan's sewage treatment and recycling system.

Earlier in the day, Morales took the opportunity to sign a communique with the Marshall Islands' ambassador to Taiwan, Frederick Muller, on establishing diplomatic relations between their two countries, the ministry said.

The visit comes amid Guatemala's efforts to expand its foreign relations, the ministry said.

The Republic of China and Guatemala have maintained good relations since they established official ties in 1933, and the ministry said the visit by Morales will help deepen the bilateral ties.

His visit follows a visit by Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes earlier this month to Taiwan to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The visits came after Panama cut formal ties with Taiwan and established diplomatic relations with China on June 13, leaving Taipei with only 20 diplomatic allies.
