Taipei, July 20 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen on Thursday wished U.S. Senator John McCain a quick recovery, after a spokesperson revealed the senator has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

"John McCain is a champion for freedom and liberty around the world," she tweeted. "I join the people of Taiwan in wishing him a quick recovery."

Tsai's remarks came after McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a staunch supporter of Taiwan, was found to have a brain tumor, following a procedure to remove a blood clot last week.

After the surgery last week, the senator "is in good spirits as he continues to recover at home with his family in Arizona," according to a statement issued by his office on Wednesday.

MaCain and his family are reviewing further treatment options with his Mayo Clinic care team, the clinic said in a statement.
