Taiwan takes 1st gold medal in Deaflympics

Taipei, July 21 (CNA) Taiwan's Chang Li-hsiao  won the gold medal in the men's singles bowling in the 23rd Summer Deaflympics Friday, the first gold medal for Taiwan in the competition that is taking place in the Turkish city of Samsun.

Chang, nicknamed "left-handed geek" because he bowls left-handed, beat his opponents from South Korea and Russia to take the gold.

According to the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education, soon after they were informed of Chang's victory, President Tsai Ing-wen, Vice President Chen Chien-jen, Premier Lin Chuan and Education Minister Pan Wen-chung sent congratulatory messages to Chang.

In 2005, Taiwan's Deaflympics team won nine golds, four silvers and three bronzes, with Chang himself pocketing four golds and two silvers, while in the last event, held in 2013, Taiwan won three golds, 12 silvers and nine bronzes.

The 23rd Summer Deaflympics kicked off on July 18 and will run through July 30.

Taiwan has sent a delegation of 106 members, including 61 athletes, competing in 12 categories .
