Taipei, July 21 (CNA) A group of legislators established an international healthcare exchange association on Friday to promote Taiwan's medical expertise on the global stage, with Legislative Speaker Su Jia-chyuan chosen as honorary president.

The aim behind the association is to help raise Taiwan's international profile while also connecting the island with leading medical institutions around the world through cooperation and exchange, Su noted in his Facebook post.

Despite Taiwan's exclusion from the World Health Assembly (WHA) this year, many countries have chosen to speak up on Taiwan's behalf, arguing that the island is part of a global healthcare community and willing to contribute its medical know-how and expertise worldwide, he added.

The association will be headed by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Chiu Tai-yuan, with legislators Wu Kuen-yuh and Chuang Jui-hsiung assuming the role of deputy directors, according to Su.

"I'm honored to have been invited to serve as honorary president," Su said, adding that under the leadership of Chiu, Wu and Chuang, he believes the association will do much to promote Taiwan's medical expertise around the world.
