Taiwan wins 6 medals at Math Olympiad in Brazil

Taipei, July 22 (CNA) Taiwan's six-member team to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Brazil has won a total of six medals -- one gold, four silver and one bronze -- according to the Ministry of Education.

The gold medal winner is Cheng Tien-chun of Kaohsiung Municipal Senior High School, while the four silver medalists are Wang Shih-yu  of National Experimental High School at the Hsinchu Science Park, Chiu Yu-pin of Kaohsiung Municipal Senior High School, Lee Shuang-yen of Tainan First Senior High School and Cheng Jung-tao of Taipei Jianguo High School. Kao Wei-jiun of Taichung First Senior High School won the bronze medal.

A total of 615 participants from 111 countries are taking part in this year's competition, which is being held July 12-23 in Rio de Janeiro.

With its medal haul to date, the Taiwanese team is currently in ninth place, while South Korea is at the top of the table with six gold medals.
