Taipei, July 27 (CNA) Taoyuan has opened a new center providing services to new immigrants and migrant workers in the city, in an effort to improve the services available to them.
The Taoyuan New Immigrants Joint Services Center was opened on Wednesday.
Citing statistics compiled by the National Immigration Agency, Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan said at the official opening ceremony that there are about 57,000 new immigrants in the city, accounting for 11 percent of the total nationwide.
The center is an example of the efforts being made by the local government to better serve new immigrants in Taoyuan, most of whom come from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand, Cheng said.
Cheng noted it was the city government's commission for new immigrant affairs that came up with the plan to open the joint services center.
As part of ongoing efforts to better care for new immigrants and migrant workers, Cheng said the city government plans to establish a culture hall where they can promote culture, food and sports activities.
The hall is set to open in April 2018 and will also provide new immigrants with help finding jobs, legal assistance and other services, he added.
