Taipei, July 27 (CNA) This year's biennial WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup will kick off in Tainan on Friday, with 12 teams from home and abroad competing.

The teams competing in the fourth WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup come from Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Panama, Nicaragua, Germany, Taiwan, the Czech Republic and the United States, according to the organizers.

Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te said at a news conference on Thursday that students from 12 elementary schools in the city will welcome and help members on the foreign teams to promote people-to-people cultural exchange.

This year's tournament, which will run through Aug. 6, is scheduled to take place at Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium, Shanhua Stadium and Guei-Ren Baseball Stadium.

The U-12 Baseball World Cup was established by the World Baseball Softball Confederation in 2011, as part of its efforts to promote the sport. The first event was held in Taipei and the Taiwanese team was crowned champion.

The U.S. was the winner of both the second and third U-12 Baseball World Cup, which were held in Taipei and Tainan, respectively.
