Taipei, July 31 (CNA) The Alishan Forest Recreation Area will reopen Tuesday after being closed for four days due to the passage of two storms on the weekend, the Chiayi Forest District Office said Monday.

A series of inspections were carried out and the transportation lines to the area, including the Zhaoping and Shenmu lines on the Alishan Forest Railway and the electric buses in the recreation area, will resume operations on Tuesday, the office said.

On Monday, Provincial Highway 18, also known as the Alishan Highway, and Chukou Nature Center were reopened after the storms, the office said.

The Alishan Highway connects Chiayi City and the rest of Western Taiwan, passing through Fanlu and Zhuqi to Alishan.

The Alishan recreational area was closed last Friday at 5:30 p.m. as Typhoon Nesat and Tropical Storm Haitang approached Taiwan. The two storms hit the island directly on the weekend, causing widespread infrastructure damage and agricultural losses.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) said on its website Monday that service on the Alishan Forest Railway Main Line, which runs from Chiayi to Fenqihu, will continue to be suspended on Tuesday due to storm damage on the railway and in the tunnels.

It said however the mountan railway system's Chushan, Zhaoping and Shenmu lines will return to normal operations starting from Monday midnight.

The Alishan Forest Railway is an 86 kilometer network of narrow gauge railways that run up and around Alishan in Chiayi.

The railway, which was used for logging in the early 1900s, is now a popular tourist attraction that carries passengers over 77 wooden bridges and into 50 tunnels.
