Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) Ridership of the airport mass rapid transit (MRT) line between Taipei and Taoyuan is expected to surpass 10 million by the end of August, Taoyuan Metro Corp. Chairman Liu Kun-yi said Wednesday.

Liu said that the line had carried 8.6 million passengers as of the end of July, about five months after it started commercial operation, a growth rate that could translate to a total ridership of more than 10 million within one month.

Statistics show that the line carries 54,000 passengers per day, with the stops at Taipei Main Station, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Airport Terminal 1, Airport Terminal 2 and Taoyuan High Speed Rail Station being the busiest ones.

These stations jointly account for 68 percent of total passengers using the line, and among them, Taipei Main Station tops with 2.25 million rides, or 26.1 percent, over the past five months.

The stations at Hengshan and Xingnan, both in Taoyuan, are the least used ones, Liu said.

The company explained that there are fewer urban development projects near the two stations compared with others, leading to smaller populations.
