Taipei, Aug. 4 (CNA) An international summit on women's empowerment in politics will be held for the first time in Taiwan next week, an official with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said Friday.
Organized by the country's ruling party and the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD), the "CALD Women's Caucus Conference in Taipei" will be held Aug. 11-12, according to DPP Deputy Secretary-General Hsu Chia-ching.
Hsu said this year's conference will be themed "Women empowering women: Experiences across Asia" and that several female political figures from the region have been invited to speak, including Kalaya Sophonpanich, an official with Thailand's Democrat Party.
Meanwhile, local speakers will include Taiwan Visitors Association Chairwoman Yeh Chu-lan, former Vice President Annette Lu, and DPP legislators Hsiao Bi-khim and Lee Li-feng , the deputy secretary-general said.
Each will share and discuss their experiences as well as identify key issues and concerns for women in politics.
This year's conference will also touch on women's rights in various career positions, as well as the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) persons.
Established in Bangkok in 1993, CALD is a regional organization whose members include liberal and democratic political parties across Asia, including the Cambodia National Rescue Party, Taiwan's DPP, Thailand's Democrat Party, the Philippines Liberal Party, and others.
