Taipei, Aug. 5 (CNA) Taiwan's first nation-wide indigenous radio station is scheduled to start broadcasting on Aug. 9 and plans to broadcast content in 16 indigenous languages.

The Alian 96.3 radio station, operated by the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Foundation, will feature 15 programs on a wide range of topics, including music and entertainment, gourmet cooking, social care, sightseeing, parental education, arts and sports and healthcare, according to information from the foundation's website.

The radio station will also work with voice actors and indigenous language teachers to broadcast content in all 16 of Taiwan's indigenous languages, according to the foundation.

"Alian" means "good friends" in the language of the Paiwan tribe, the foundation said, expressing hope that the radio station will become "good friends" with the Taiwanese people, spur conversations about indigenous issues and further promote the diverse cultures of Taiwan's indigenous population.

The station is expected to reach more than 90 percent of the indigenous villages in the country and over 70 percent of the indigenous population.
